This morning I walked my usual route. Behind me I heard a voice yelling, and I turned around to see if someone was calling me. I had not heard such language in a while. A young lady was yelling in her phone, using obsene words, so I moved off the sidewalk to the bike lane of the street. She passed me, still yelling and to my utter surprise threw her cell phone on the road. At that moment a police car passed her, made a u turn and came back wondering if something was wrong. Naturally, I stood there speechless and wondered if I was suddenly a suspect in a bizarre situation. The officer asked her a question and then came to my spot on the street. I explained that I had nothing to do with her and he said "I know."
Fear caused all kind of emotions for a few minutes. These were my thoughts "I do not look like her (complexion), I have an accent (officer calls INS and off to Panama I go (smile), why did I choose to walk this morning? etc." The ghost of other days surfaced, even after I had buried it decades ago.
The officer's name was Ruiz, and he smiled and said, "Tenga un buen día, señor." (Have a good day, sir) Whew! I replied, "mil gracias" (a thousand thanks) and completed my 3 mile walk in record time.
It is amazing how old feelings come out of new experiences!!! Great story!!!
